- <H2> DEAR MOM
- <H2> SAMPLE LETTERS August 9, 1960 - ManilaAugust 25, 1963 - HelsinkiJanuary 7, 1965 - Calcutta
- <H2> EXCERPTS"On our last full day we traveled to Kalimpong, close to the Sikkim boarder, and coincidentally were watching the mountain pass to Tibet on the day the Chinese made two intrusions in to Sikkim. We must have been the only Americans to see the armed aggression." "The week before New Year’s was busy and I have become tied up with an Indian girl – the wealthy one from the Tea Center in London. She flew home for the holidays so certainly she must have rupees to burn. She seems to have fallen hopelessly under my spell and believes she is going to become my wife, but I am rather skeptical that you will ever have a Bengali Princess for a daughter-in-law. Pity because that is certainly an exotic thought. This girl is so bazaar that I doubt if she realizes there are a group of people on earth who actually work and it is this which makes the world go around. She floats endlessly in her world of art, poetry and creativity. If I have always had a facility for meeting different sorts of people, this must be a record.""While everything looks so bright for 1965 in America, it is very moving to see a country, or live in a country, where everything will deteriorate further during the year to come. Hardships on the average man will increase, prices will rise, unrest will continue, and more human freedoms will be turned over to the central government, who in turn will botch up things even more. It is a pathetic situation here. And in the States, at least according to LBJ, everything in the U.S. is just perfect, and going to get even more perfect. He apparently wants every family in Appalachia to own at least two cars. Why not? I only hope they can make the sidewalks a safe place to walk for women; the scenery something that can be seen without looking through a signboard; the South a place there they don’t bomb an African church every Sunday; etc. Let’s hope 1965 is as full of wonderful things for us as last year; whatever they are they should be new, exciting and unpredictable.""Did you receive the post cards from CCCP? If not, maybe someday when the censors have finished, or maybe never. We made it in to Moscow safe and sound on Aeroflot, via Leningrad, and just in time for me to take in the Siberian dancers which were slightly stilted – not as lively or spontaneous as the Bayanihen dancers performing Filpino dances. They can really fly through the air however. ""The car that took us to the station was a “63 Ford Ranch Wagon and it attracted 30 or 40 onlookers who would have voted Kennedy in office as Chairman of the Party when the back window went up automatically.""Someone someday may write a book “The Affluent Socialist Society”. Well I hope so but Mr. K will not be in office then."
